dear Fellow Netters,
I have just subscribed to thw WATOC list and I would ask you
for comments on my idea to provide you with information on
books published by Springer-Verlag. As a starter, I have
attached an example for an information text. Upon request, I
can also provide complete Tables of Contents for all books.

Springer-Verlag is also operating a mail-server with many files
for free distribution. As an example, I OCR scan the Tables of
Contents of issues of Theoretica Chimica Acta. There is also a
file with all texts for Lecture Notes in Chemistry volumes.

You can get these and other files through e-mail and ftp.
1. E-Mail:
Send a message GET /CHEMISTRY/<file_name.extension>
to: SVSERV@VAX.NTP.SPRINGER.DE
NOTE: Binaries (extension *.exe and *.zip) will be sent
UUdeCoded. That requires you have the UUCODE software.
A MSDOS version is available from the directory /UTILITY.
If you order UUCODE.ZIP you will also need the file
BINSTART.TXT.
For a help file with all commands available explained, send the
message HELP; for a complete list of files available send the
command: DIRALL to the server's internet address.

2. FTP:
The address of the anonymous ftp-server is:
TRICK.NTP.SPRINGER.DE (or 192.129.24.12)
User ID is ANONYMOUS
Password is Your_e-mail_address

All files will be updated at irregular intervals. If you have
any suggestions for additional information, please drop me a
message.

Springer-Verlag also offers a Journals_Preview_Service which
makes tables of contents for some biosciences journals
available a few weeks before release of the issues.

Orbital Symmetry and Reaction Mechanism - The OCAMS View

1991. Approx. 355 pp. 113 figs. Hardcover ISBN 3-540-50164-9

Criteria of orbital symmetry conservation had a profound
influence on mechanistic thinking in organic chemistry and are
still commonly applied today. The author presents a coherent
set of operational rules for the analysis of scope and
reliability. It is written from the viewpoint of
_Orbital_Correspondence_Analysis_in_Maximum_Symmetry (OCAMS).
Its advantage lies in its provision of a coherent overview of
the relation between symmetry and mechanism. For reasons of
consistency, the book remains within the framework of molecular
orbital theory.

>From the contents: The Woodward-Hoffmann Rules in Perspective.-
Symmetry and Energy: Atoms and Atomic Orbitals.- Diatomic
Molecules and their Molecular Orbitals.- Formation and
Deformation of Polyatomic Molecules.- The Classical Thermal
Reactions: Electrocyclic Reactions and Related Rearrangements.-
Cycloadditions and Cycloreversions.- Degenerate
Rearrangements.- Spin and Photochemistry: Electron Spin.-
Excited State Reactions.- Into Inorganic Chemistry.

Modern mechanistic thinking in organic chemistry is still
influenced by the publication of Woodward and Hoffmann
"Conservation of orbital symmetry" in 1965. The author explains
the foundation of these rules coherently. He outlines the scope
and limitations of the model with respect to recent
experimental research. The book is written for students in
chemistry.
