Sidebar: The Isotopic Cluster of Rhenium Organometallic Complexes

The isotopic cluster of CpRe(CO)2(h3-allyl) (from page three of this poster).

The four peaks in the isotopic cluster of a typical monorhenium organometallic compound arise from the existence of two main naturally occurring isotopes for both rhenium and carbon.
Abundances: 185Re 37%, 187Re 63%; 12 C 99%, 13C 1%
For each of the parent ions identified in these experiments, the calibrated mass values observed combined with the correct isotopic pattern conclusively establish that the assignments are accurate.
