ETHANOL:
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE
TOXIC BY INHALATION AND IF SWALLOWED
Colourless liquid with slight characteristic odour; b.p. 78ºC. Miscible with water in all proportions. Toxic by
ingestion. OES 1900 mgm-3
Toxic effects:Intoxicating by ingestion. Irritating to eyes. If ingested in undiluted form has a sever
drying effect on mucous membranes of mouth and throat. Can be damaging if splashed
in eyes.
Hazardous reactions:Can react vigourously with oxidising materials. Can react violently with violently with
potassium oxides and potassium. Ignites in contact with platinum-black catalyst. Can
react violently with silver nitrate.
Fire Hazard:Flash point -117ºC, ignition temp. 78ºC; extinguish fire with dry powder.
Spillage & disposal:Dilute with water and run to waste. Ventilate area to dispel residual vapour.
2-PROPANOL (iso-PROPANOL):
HIGHLY FLAMMABLE
TOXIC BY INHALATION AND IF SWALLOWED
Colourless liquid with characteristic odour; b.p. 82ºC. Miscible with water in all proportions. Toxic by ingestion
at high levels (fatal dose ca. 100 ml). OEL 980 mgm-3-skin
Toxic effects:Toxic by ingestion. Damaging to eyes by direct contact. Inhalation of vapour at high
concentrations may cause headache, nausea, dizziness, mentaldepression, vomiting,
narcosis, anaesthesia and coma.
Hazardous reactions:Avoid contact with oxidisers.
Fire Hazard:Flash point 104ºC, ignition temp. 571ºC; extinguish fire with dry powder or CO2.
Spillage & disposal:Wear goggles and nitrile gloves in a well ventilated area.Shut off all sources of
ignition.Dilute with water and run to waste. Ventilate area to dispel residual vapour.
For large spillages, contain spillage with sand and transfer to salvage containers.
ACETOPHENONE:
HARMFUL BY INHALATION AND IF SWALLOWED
Colourless liquid or crystals; m.p. 20.5ºC, b.p. 202ºC. Slightly soluble in water. Harmful by ingestion.
Toxic effects:Harmful by ingestion. Irritating to skin and eyes. Vapour narcotic in high
concentrations.
Hazardous reactions:Can react vigourously with oxidising materials. Can ignite in contact with potassium
tert-butoxide. Can react exothermically with aluminium. Can form explosive
peroxides on prolonged storage.
Spillage & disposal:Wear goggles and nitrile gloves. Mix with inert absorbentand transfer to labelled
container for disposal. Wash area of spillage thoroughly with water and detergent.
4-tert-BUTYLCYCLOHEXANONE

Toxic effects:Harmful by ingestion
Hazardous reactions:Not available
Fire Hazard:Flash point 96ºC, ignition temp. not available; extinguish fire with dry powder.
