Atom Transfer Radical Polymerisation (ATRP)

ATRP is a relatively new approach to controlled radical polymerisation involving the transfer of a halogen atom between a transition metal complex and the end of a polymer chain. There is considerable interest in developing new catalysts for this process, especially systems based on biocompatible metals such as iron. We have found that diimine iron complexes are robust catalysts that operate in non-protic and protic media and afford good control over molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. More recently, we’ve introduced a new family of highly active iron ATRP catalysts based on tridentate Schiff base ligands.
