Nucleic Acids

The nucleic acids, DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (Ribonucleic acid) are quite large, complex molecules found within all living cells. The backbone is built up of two different monomer units: DNA is the genetic material in organisms, is able to replicate itself and be passed on from one generation of cells to the next. Genes, which provide the instructions for the cells activities are made up of DNA.
RNA is used in the synthesis of proteins encoded by the DNA.
