"Molecular Linkers for Quantum Interference Enhanced Thermoelectricity (QuIET)"

The field of molecular electronics focusses on the study of small molecular units with potential applications as electronic components. One of the most fundamental studies within this area concerns the study of single molecule junctions, such as through the use of STM break junction techniques, whereby a single molecule is utilized to bridge two metal electrodes.

The use of single molecules gives rise to interesting electrochemical properties such as the thermoelectric effect, concerning the direct conversion of temperature differences into electric voltage, as well as quantum interference, which considers how electron waves interact with one another during propagation through a system.

The QuIET project will be focused on the synthesis, functionalization and study of new molecular linkers which can take advantage of the concepts mentioned above in order to produce highly thermoelectrically efficient systems that can harvest electricity from wasted thermal energy.

Personal

Outside of the lab, I enjoy reading, cinema and socialising with friends and family (but not necessarily in that order).
