Tryptophan has a chiral centre at the carbon connected to the carboxylic acid and the amine groups. Hence, it has 2 optical isomers namely D-and L-tryptophan. The chemical names are [(R)-2-Amino-3-(3-indolyl)propionic acid] and [(S)-2-Amino-3-(3-indolyl)propionic acid] respectively.
