WATOC was founded in 1982 as the World Association of Theoretical Organic Chemists in order to encourage the development and application of theoretical methods generally. The most conspicuous activities have been the WATOC World Congresses (the 8th was held in Sydney Australia in 2008), but WATOC has sponsored or co-sponsored numerous smaller conferences on more specialized topics, and serves to facilitate contacts and to disseminate information.
From the beginning, WATOC never was restricted to organic chemistry, and in recognition of this, the WATOC board has adopted the name "World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists" as better reflecting its activities.
There are no formal membership requirements. Members generally are Ph.D. chemists (or students) working in Industry or Academia. It is expected that members will support the goals of WATOC (as stated above).
