Butane, C4H10



If we extend the propane chain further by replacing a C-H bonds in propane and inserting a -CH2- group will give the butane molecule. Butane is also used extensively as a camping fuel for lighting, heating and cooking, but at relatively warmer temperatures, as butane codenses to a liquid at 0 °C and so can not be used in cold coditions. Propane however condenses at -42 °C and so is better suited to cooler temperatures. A common use for butane is in cigarette lighters although in industry a large ammount of butane is used to produce 1,3-butadiene which is a component of synthetic rubber.
