Confusion amongst html and html+ standards!
Browsers need not support all features.
- html 1.3: The first stable version, incorporated into early CERN and NCSA browsers.
- html 2.0: Defined principally by the capabilities of NCSA Mosaic 2.4. Partial implementation of what was html+
- html 3.0: Support for
- auto-sizing tables,
- text wrap-around for images
- local client based hot-spot image mapping,
- overlaying multiple images and image scaling (compositional graphics)
- multiple submit buttons for forms
- Other character sets
- background texture.
- Rationalise "bad" html constructs. Version 3.0 compatible browsers may not support "bad" html.
- For example, <P> must have a </P> to be valid (rarely done currently)
- <LI> should have a </LI> but again rarely done
- html 3.1: Support for equation setting.
- html 3.2: Features still being discussed, including potentially chemistry.
- Compatibility with Braille SGML dtps and support for text-to-speech conversion.
- Continued support for line mode only browsers such as Lynx.
