SKILLS

Technical skills

My PhD project concerns the theoretical study of liquids which are confined inside nanopores. Numerical methods and computational techniques like molecular dynamics are used on a daily basis, where computer programming is essential. The work involves a high level of numeracy and scientific analysis.

During the time I was working in the industry, I was also exposed to the use of many different software packages, most of them for the use and calibration of analysis instrumentation. This allowed me to feel comfortable in handling both software and hardware and their installation. In addition I developed a high level of technical support / customer care.

Organisational skills

In addition to my postgraduate studies, which involve both individual and group research, my work experience provided me with strong organisational skills. I had to deal with a large number of customers while keeping their profiles updated. I also had to organise frequent visits to customer sites, which required travelling for long periods of time and a lot of planning.

Communication skills

I believe I am a good and effective communicator. As a scientific research student, it is indispensable to transmit your new findings to supervisors and other scientists, and I have done this through a series of talks in my own department and also in foreign universities. I am also a mathematics teaching assistant for first year chemistry students at Imperial College London. This involves solving doubts students may while doing their mathematics laboratory.

During the time I worked in Bran + Luebbe SL, I had to organise and give several training courses to customer’s employees. In one occasion, the course lasted for 5 days, and I obtained a very positive feedback from them. An extremely demanding task was the training provided to customers in the agricultural sector, since their computer literacy was very limited. Yet I managed to transmit them what was necessary. At Gomensoro S.A, my role as a sales specialist helped me to develop my commercial skills, which I had to use day by day basic.

Computing skills

Due to the computational nature of my PhD, I have largely expanded my computer skills during the last three years, specially in programming. In addition I completed a 300 hour course in web sites design and a 450 hour course in Visual Basic, relational databases, SQL  and C++ . I have developed my research’s group web site: http://www.ch.ic.ac.uk/bresme.

  • Operating systems: MS DOS, LINUX, Windows.
  • Software applications: MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point), MS Visual Studio, LATEX, MATHEMATICA

  • Databases: Access, MS SQL Server.
  • Web design tools: FrontPage, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash.
